Overview: The Arnold Palmer Course at Chung Shan Hot Spring Golf Club is the original modern 18-hole course at Zhongshan. It opened in 1984 and was designed by Arnold Palmer, with the club describing a routing that demands precise shot-making. The course sits in Guangdong's foothill landscape and forms one half of a 36-hole club, so its identity is both historic and architectural: this is a working course with a direct connection to the arrival of modern golf in mainland China.
History: Chung Shan's original 18 holes date to 1984, making it the first modern-day golfing establishment in the People's Republic according to the club. An adjoining 18-hole Nicklaus routing followed in November 1993. The Palmer Course hosted the Alfred Dunhill Cup Asia-Pacific qualifier in 1988 and China Open amateur championships.
Did You Know? Arnold Palmer's work at Chung Shan has significance beyond the course itself. The club was one of the first modern golf projects in mainland China, and Palmer's involvement helped give the new course international visibility. The current club is unusual because Palmer and Nicklaus both have separate 18-hole courses on the same property.
