Overview: Chevy Chase Club is a private 18-hole parkland course in Chevy Chase, Maryland, close to Washington, D.C. The current par-70 layout measures 6,742 yards and runs across mature, gently rolling ground. Its identity is layered rather than tied to one untouched design: early twentieth-century work by Donald Ross and C.H. Alison is interpreted through later changes and Andrew Green’s 2024-25 renovation. Tree-lined corridors, shaped greens and restored bunkering now express several generations of American golf architecture in one course.
History: The club was organised in 1892 and added a six-hole course by 1895. A new course was dedicated in 1911, then comprehensively reconstructed by Colt, MacKenzie & Alison in 1923. Donald Ross had remodelled the course earlier in the century, while later work included Robert Trent Jones in 1947 and Arthur Hills’ major renovation in 1997. Andrew Green’s full-course project, completed in 2025, used historical evidence to bring back characteristics associated with C.H. Alison, and the renovated Upper course reopened in summer 2025. Because the present 18-hole layout is the result of this succession of reconstructions, no single opening year is assigned.
Did You Know? The 2025 renovation restored a par-three 15th hole as a reference to a lost hole from the club’s earlier course history. The project also used historical aerial photography to guide the return of older lines, greens and bunkering, making the newest version of the course a study in how a living layout can preserve multiple architectural eras.
