Overview: Chattanooga Golf & Country Club occupies a historic bluff along the Tennessee River, where a traditional Donald Ross routing uses the river edge, mature trees and rolling ground to create a compact but demanding parkland round. The profile's par-71 layout measures 6,694 yards, yet the challenge is not simply length: firm greens, narrow landing areas, river wind and Ross-style approach angles make placement essential. Several holes turn toward the water, giving the course a strong visual rhythm and a direct connection to Chattanooga's landscape.
History: The club was founded in 1896 at the end of the old Riverview trolley line, and it remains the oldest course at its original site in Tennessee. Donald Ross worked on the course in the 1920s, establishing the architectural character that still defines the property. In 2005, Bill Bergin carried out a substantial enhancement guided by the club's historic intent and aerial evidence. The modern course is therefore a layered document: an 1890s club, a 1920s Ross design and a carefully considered twenty-first-century restoration.
Did You Know? Chattanooga Golf & Country Club was formed only eight years after the opening of the first golf course in the United States. Its riverside location was originally linked to the city by the Riverview trolley, making the club an early example of golf developing alongside local transport and civic growth.
