Overview: Chandigarh Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course in Sector 6, beside Sukhna Lake and close to the residences of the Punjab and Haryana Governors. The club lists the course at 7,202 yards, while the Chandigarh Golf Association records a par of 72. Mature trees line the fairways, with mango, jamun, eucalyptus and kikar among the species noted in the course description. The result is a leafy, strategically enclosed layout that sits naturally within Chandigarh's planned landscape. A floodlit nine-hole course and floodlit driving range add to the club's role as one of the region's principal golf centres.
History: The Chandigarh Golf Club came into existence in 1962 after land was allotted for a course in the new city. The first version had fewer holes and developed incrementally, with additional holes allowing members to make an 18-hole round. By 1977-78, rising membership led to the decision to expand across land on the other side of the road. Peter Thomson, the five-time Open champion, supplied the plan, and Army machinery helped improve the stony riverbed site. Work continued through the early 1980s before the layout took the shape recognised today.
Did You Know? The early course had six par fours, one par five and two par threes, making a par of 35 for its first nine. The club's heritage account records that a second green was later added for the first hole, and that further holes gradually made an 18-hole round possible before the full expansion project.
