Overview: Chagrin Valley Country Club in Chagrin Falls is a Stanley Thompson design that makes the most of a naturally varied valley site. Rivers cross the property, mature trees frame the corridors and rock formations appear as part of the landscape rather than as decorative obstacles. The 18-hole parkland routing changes character as it moves through the ground, with the natural topography influencing both sightlines and approach angles. The course's interest comes from how convincingly the holes belong to the valley.
History: The club's golf story began in 1921, when a nine-hole course opened on the Mapes farm. Stanley Thompson later shaped the full course, establishing the routing that made the surrounding land central to the playing experience. The club has retained that original relationship with the site while maintaining the course as a private Ohio layout, and the current scorecard records a par of 71 at approximately 6,809 yards.
Did You Know? The Chagrin River appears in the course routing at holes 2, 12 and 14, while a natural rock formation is associated with the fourth. Those details are more than scenery: they show how Thompson used existing water and geology to give individual holes different identities within one continuous valley landscape.
