Overview: The Roman Road Course was the first championship course at Celtic Manor and remains an open, elevated parkland test above the Usk Valley. Robert Trent Jones Sr. used the estate's rolling ground to create broad fairways, substantial elevation changes and long approaches, with views extending across the Severn Estuary towards Somerset. Its strategy comes from changing lies, slope and distance as much as from the bunkering.
History: The Roman Road opened in 1995 as the resort's first golf course and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. It established the course identity that preceded the later Montgomerie and Twenty Ten layouts, helping turn the estate into a multi-course golf resort. The course has since hosted professional and disability golf events.
Did You Know? The course takes its name from the Via Julia, the Roman road that once linked the fortress at Caerleon with Caerwent. The historic route gives the layout a direct connection to the archaeology and transport history of the surrounding Newport landscape.
