Overview: Cathcart Castle Golf Club lies on Mearns Road in Clarkston, on the southern edge of Glasgow. The James Braid course climbs and falls across undulating ground lined with birch and pine, with burns cutting through several holes. At a little over 5,900 yards to a par of 70 it is not long, but the land and the placement of hazards make it a sterner test than the number suggests, and approach play decides most cards.
History: Cathcart Castle began as a Glasgow club in 1895, playing nearer the city before it moved to the former farm at Clarkston in 1925. James Braid laid out the new course; the clubhouse incorporates the original farmhouse, and a carved wooden figure of Braid now marks the entrance. The move created the course the club plays at Mearns Road today.
Did You Know? The Braid layout at Cathcart Castle includes six par threes, an unusual number for an eighteen-hole course. That balance puts a heavy premium on mid and long iron accuracy and explains how such a compact card can still play tough.
