Overview: The Guadiana/Atlântico combination is the original 18-hole heart of Castro Marim Golfe, close to Portugal’s eastern border and the Guadiana River. Terry Murray’s design uses pine-lined corridors, rolling ground, elevated greens, bunkers, water, and occasional downhill lies to produce a parkland course with more movement than the coastal plain suggests. One moment the player chooses a line through trees, and the next the land opens into a valley or demands a carry across a natural depression.
History: Castro Marim’s golf development grew around three nine-hole loops, with the Guadiana and Atlântico nines designed in 2001 by Terry Murray. The directory profile represents an exact 18-hole pairing, not the entire three-loop facility. Its location near the Spanish border and river shaped the resort’s identity, while the later third loop added flexibility without changing the original character of this ranked combination.
Did You Know? The name links two geographic ideas appearing in the round. Guadiana refers to the river and border landscape to the east, while Atlântico points toward the wider coast. The holes do not play as a literal riverfront or seaside links, but pine woodland, open wind, and valley relief give the routing a clear sense of the eastern Algarve’s meeting point between inland and coast.
