Overview: Castiglion del Bosco Golf Club is an 18-hole private course in Tuscany's Val d'Orcia, routed through the rolling hills, cypress country and vineyard landscape of the historic estate near Montalcino. Tom Weiskopf shaped the course to follow valleys and ridges with limited earth movement, allowing the natural land to supply the changes of elevation and the changing scale of the views. The par-72 layout asks for careful club selection on sloping ground and into large, subtly shaped putting surfaces. Its identity is inseparable from the estate, but the golf remains a distinct Weiskopf study in terrain and restraint.
History: Work on the golf club began in 2009, and the estate history records completion of the 18-hole course in 2010. The club's own account describes the course as opening in 2012, the date retained in the directory record, so the distinction between construction completion and the later opening is made explicit here. Weiskopf created the course in partnership with Phil Smith, and the estate's protected Val d'Orcia setting was treated as a design asset rather than a blank canvas. The course remains Italy's only private golf club within this estate tradition.
Did You Know? The club's official site adds a 19th hole called the Brunello Hole, a short closing challenge connected to the estate's wine culture. It is a memorable architectural coda to the 18-hole course, linking the golf layout to the Sangiovese vineyards and the Brunello identity of the surrounding property.
