Overview: Cardross Golf Club occupies rolling ground above the north bank of the River Clyde, between Dumbarton and Helensburgh. Broad, undulating fairways run between mature deciduous trees, and the course has a long-standing reputation for playing longer than its scorecard of roughly 6,370 yards to a par of 71. Views reach across the firth, and the slopes mean many approaches are played from uneven lies, which rewards a golfer who can control trajectory as well as distance.
History: The club was formed on 5 November 1895 after local residents met in the village school. Early holes reflected the work of Willie Fernie, but the modern character arrived after James Braid produced recommendations for a revised layout. Those changes were completed in 1921, and the reworked course was opened with an exhibition match involving Braid and Harry Vardon. Cardross later hosted the 1992 Scottish Professional Championship.
Did You Know? Paul Lawrie won the 1992 Scottish Professional Championship at Cardross, seven years before he became Open champion at Carnoustie. The event connected the Braid-era course with a major moment in the eventual champion’s career.
