CapRock Ranch

Overview: CapRock Ranch, perched on the rim of the dramatic Snake River Canyon in Valentine, Nebraska, is an extraordinary private inland links designed by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner. Set within the vast, rolling dunes of the Nebraska Sandhills, the course features a dramatic layout where the massive sand dunes transition into sheer cliff-edge holes overlooking the winding river hundreds of feet below. Devoid of traditional trees and heavily exposed to the prairie winds, the course demands creative ground-game strategy, precise distance control, and a mastery of angles on its firm, fast-running fescue fairways.

History: Opened in 2021, the development of CapRock Ranch has a fascinating history. Hanse had originally routed the course in 2004 for a different ownership group, but the project stalled; nearly fifteen years later, new developers purchased the site and brought Hanse back to execute his plans. Hanse has since noted that the decade-long delay allowed him and Wagner to refine the design, resulting in a significantly more strategic and visually dramatic layout than originally envisioned.

Did You Know? The dramatic par-3 4th hole plays directly along the edge of the canyon, with the green perched on a rocky outcropping that drops off vertically into the Snake River below, presenting one of the most thrilling and visually intimidating tee shots in the Midwest. The course is named after the unique "caprock" geological formations,flat slabs of sandstone that crop out along the canyon walls.
