Overview: Capital City Country Club occupies a rolling, oak- and pine-covered property in central Tallahassee, close to the Florida Capitol and the city’s universities. A.W. Tillinghast’s parkland design uses mature live oaks, Spanish moss and surprisingly strong elevation change to create a course that does not play like flat Florida golf. The 18-hole routing is par 72 and measures 6,502 yards from the blue tees. Its strategic interest comes from changing lies, framed corridors and the way the ground alters the preferred approach.
History: Capital City traces its club history to 1908, but the present golf property developed through several phases. The earlier Tallahassee Country Club course grew from a few sand-green holes to nine holes, and the land was transferred to the City of Tallahassee in 1935. Tillinghast’s work in the mid-1930s established the course identity recorded today. The club later became semi-private, with limited public play remaining part of its current operation.
Did You Know? The course sits less than five minutes from the State Capitol, Florida State University and Florida A&M University, yet its mature trees can make the property seem far removed from downtown. That contrast is one reason Capital City has remained such a distinctive Tallahassee landmark: it is a historic golf landscape embedded in the city rather than separated from it.
