Overview: Canyon Springs Golf Club is an 18-hole public course in north San Antonio, built through rolling Hill Country terrain that once formed part of the Classen family ranch. Thomas Walker designed the layout with the stated philosophy of letting the land lead. Mature trees, limestone waterfalls, natural vegetation, wildlife and changing elevations give the course a strong sense of place, while five tee positions keep the 7,077-yard, par-72 layout playable across a broad range of abilities. The loop design lets many holes feel secluded, even though the course is close to the expanding city. Its signature character is less about manufactured spectacle than about the way the golf holes reveal the existing landscape.
History: Canyon Springs opened in 1998 and was quickly recognised by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine as America’s Best New Public Golf Course. In 2020, a renovation updated the greens with TifEagle Bermuda, added Zoysia collars and reshaped bunkers and other playing surfaces. The work kept Walker’s original land-led concept while improving the day-to-day consistency of the course. The site’s historic traces, including an old cemetery, buildings and stone accents associated with the original homestead, remain part of the story golfers encounter around the round.
Did You Know? The 18th is a 400-yard par four that finishes beside a limestone waterfall. That combination of a demanding final hole and a geological feature is a fitting summary of Canyon Springs, where the strongest moments come from the land and the golf arriving together.
