Overview: Canterbury Golf Club in Beachwood is a Herbert Strong parkland design whose broad fairways and wooded edges sit on the rolling ground east of Cleveland. The course's interest is concentrated around its green complexes and the way the holes change direction, asking for different approaches rather than repeating one template. Mature trees frame the corridors, while the terrain creates a varied sequence of uphill, downhill and sidehill lies. It is a substantial par-72 course that combines a traditional setting with a demanding championship scale.
History: Development began in 1921, and Herbert Strong's 18-hole course opened on July 1, 1922. J.H. Way later made changes to the second nine, beginning in 1928, as the club refined the routing. Canterbury has since hosted 13 major championships and numerous other important events, including the 2009 Senior PGA Championship. Those tournaments form part of a long competitive history without obscuring the original architectural identity.
Did You Know? Canterbury's championship record reaches across several eras of the game. The course has hosted major events for both men's and senior fields, so its history is not tied to one tournament or generation. That repeated use reflects the strength of the original routing and the club's continuing ability to present it at championship standard.
