Overview: Canoe Brook’s South Course is a private historic layout in Summit and Short Hills, New Jersey. Charles H. Alison shaped the course with assistance from the Colt and MacKenzie design tradition, creating a strategic parkland test with the scale and detail of the Golden Age.
History: Canoe Brook acquired the South Course land in 1922 and retained Alison to design the layout, with professional Isaac Mackie assisting during construction. The course was developed through the 1920s and opened as the club’s second 18-hole course in 1929.
Did You Know? Alison’s work at Canoe Brook was influenced by H.S. Colt and Alister MacKenzie, architects whose ideas also shaped courses such as Sunningdale, Pine Valley and Augusta National. The South Course is therefore part of a particularly important design lineage.
