Overview: Camberley Heath is a classic Surrey sandbelt course where pine, heather and gently undulating ground create a quiet but exacting test. Harry Colt’s design uses the natural contours to build strategic choices into the fairways and greens. The course is not especially long by modern standards, yet the combination of narrow lines, raised targets, deep hazards and changing lies keeps the player thinking from the first tee to the last.
History: The club was established in 1913 and the opening drive was taken by Prince Albert of Schleswig-Holstein. Camberley’s royal and military associations continued through the early years, while the course hosted the Lagonda Trophy and Open regional qualifying. A later conservation and restoration programme, guided by Colt specialist Frank Pont, has focused on bunker work, tree management and heather regeneration.
Did You Know? The Duke of York, later King George VI, was closely associated with the club, and the Prince of Wales served as patron. An early exhibition match also brought Harry Vardon, J. H. Taylor, James Braid and Tommy Armour into Camberley’s long golfing story.
