Overview: Calgary Golf & Country Club is one of Alberta’s historic private golf clubs, established in 1897 on the south side of Calgary. Golf Canada lists the current facility as an 18-hole, par-70 course measuring 6,503 yards. The layout has the character of a mature parkland course: established trees, rolling ground and a compact urban setting frame holes where angle and placement matter. Its importance is not only numerical or scenic. The course belongs to the early history of organised golf in Calgary, yet its present routing still reflects the deliberate architectural work that followed its first form.
History: Historical accounts credit Tom Bendelow with the original course and Willie Park Jr. with a substantial reworking in 1922. Park’s intervention introduced more defined strategic shaping and helped establish the course’s lasting character. The club’s long history has allowed the property to mature without losing its architectural lineage, while modern maintenance keeps the 18-hole route in use as an active private club. The contrast between the 1897 founding date and the later Park work is important: the club is old, but the course golfers see today is the product of several stages of development.
Did You Know? The Stanley Thompson Society records Calgary Golf & Country Club as the site of Canada’s first watered fairways. That early irrigation step was a notable piece of course history, helping a prairie golf club maintain a more consistent playing surface while the surrounding city continued to grow.
