Burnham & Berrow (Championship)

Overview: Burnham & Berrow's Championship Course is a sandy links on the Somerset coast, routed through large dunes and rumpled ground between Burnham-on-Sea and Berrow. The exposed setting brings wind into the strategy, while fast greens, run-offs and natural hollows reward precise approaches. The course has the open, irregular character of a traditional seaside layout, with the dunes providing both separation between holes and the principal source of visual definition.

History: The club expanded from its early Burnham course towards Berrow in the 1890s, taking the combined name Burnham & Berrow by 1896. Harry Colt later shaped much of the Championship Course, and he invited Alister MacKenzie to give his views on the new 9th and 10th holes. Their work forms an important part of the layout's architectural history.

Did You Know? Alister MacKenzie's contribution to the 9th and 10th holes came before his later work on Augusta National. At Burnham & Berrow, his ideas were applied within a moving dune landscape where the wind and the ground remain more influential than engineered features.
