Bryanston Country Club

Overview: Bryanston Country Club is a classic Johannesburg parkland course laid out among mature trees and water, with the Jukskei valley giving the setting a sense of space despite the surrounding city. The par-72 routing stretches to about 6,768 metres and brings water into play on 11 holes. Its challenge comes from choosing the right side of the fairway and arriving at the greens with a useful angle, rather than simply chasing length.

History: The land was set aside for the club in 1940 and Charles Hugh Alison designed the golf course in 1949. The first nine and clubhouse opened in 1951, with the complete course developing into the established layout known today. Bryanston’s history has included setbacks as well as growth, and the club’s Phoenix emblem reflects the way it has repeatedly rebuilt and renewed itself.

Did You Know? Water appears on 11 holes, so the course’s mature parkland scenery is also a continuous strategic theme. A shot that looks safe from the tee can still leave an awkward second if it approaches the wrong side of a pond, creek or wetland corridor.
