Brora

Overview: Brora is a traditional links on the Sutherland coast, with the Moray Firth and foothills forming the backdrop to an out-and-back course. Bent grass, beach sand, gorse, burns and the railway all enter the round, while the inward holes follow the boundary of neighbouring croft land. The course’s exposed position makes the wind a constant part of club selection.

History: Brora was founded in 1891 and James Braid later developed the layout now associated with the club. His 1923 plan remains the basis of the course, with only limited alteration to the main routing. The club has kept the playing ground close to its traditional form while continuing to maintain the greens and links land.

Did You Know? Sheep and cattle still graze parts of the course, with electric fencing used around the greens to protect the putting surfaces. Brora is also the headquarters of the James Braid Golfing Society, which meets annually to celebrate his work.
