Overview: The Donald Ross Memorial at Boyne Highlands is a public 18-hole tribute course in Harbor Springs, Michigan. Bill Newcombe’s routing recreates the character of famous Ross holes through a northern-Michigan landscape, combining familiar architectural ideas with the elevation, woods, and weather of the resort.
History: The course opened in 1989 as a compilation of classic Donald Ross holes. Boyne and Michigan designer Ray Hearn began a renovation program in 2020 to improve the accuracy and playability of the recreations while retaining the course’s memorial purpose.
Did You Know? The Donald Ross Memorial does not copy one single Ross course. Each hole is modeled after a different Ross design, so a round becomes a tour through the architect’s ideas rather than a replica of one historic routing.
