Boao Golf &Country Club

Overview: Boao Golf & Country Club is an island-style links course at the mouth of the Wanquan River in Qionghai. The rebuilt routing plays to par 72 over 7,146 yards and uses the area's combination of river, sea, wind and rough coastal vegetation as active design elements. Fairways can look open from the tee, but wild pineapple, long grass, water and shifting wind create a course where the safest line is often more valuable than an ambitious shortcut.

History: The course was not simply opened as a new project in 2012. Contemporary reporting says the original course was rebuilt after storm damage in 2010, with the reopening taking place in December 2012. The new design was a collaboration between Chinese professional Wang Jun and Peter Thomson, and retained several classic holes while routing the remainder anew.

Did You Know? The thirteenth hole follows the Wanquan River and offers two distinct strategies. A bold line can cross toward the fairway, while a conservative route avoids the aggressive carry and accepts a longer approach. River scenery and ecological vegetation are part of the decisions players must manage.
