Bloemfontein Golf Club

Overview: Bloemfontein Golf Club is a mature parkland course in South Africa’s judicial capital, where broad fairways, old bluegum trees and Free State light create a distinctly inland round. The course is shaped by its high-altitude setting, roughly 1,370 metres above sea level, and by wetland ground that can make the playing character change after rain. At around 6,228 metres and par 72, it rewards a straight drive and a thoughtful approach more than constant power.

History: The club traces its origins to 1894, making it part of the early story of organised golf in South Africa. The original 18-hole course is associated with Robert Grimsdell, while the club’s later course history includes a move to a new site in the mid-twentieth century and significant redesign work by Peter Matkovich and Dale Hayes. Bloemfontein has also hosted South African Open events, giving the course a place in the country’s competitive golf story.

Did You Know? The bluegum trees are more than a visual signature. The course was developed around wetland areas and mature plantings, so the trees help define corridors, frame landing zones and give the inland layout a cooler, more established feel than its open Free State surroundings might suggest.
