Overview: Blackwell is a compact, sandy-soil course near Bromsgrove whose scale hides the ambition of its architecture. The gently rolling parkland is threaded with mature trees, naturally free-draining fairways and bold bunkering. Its holes reward the player who understands angles and accepts that a modest-looking target can become difficult when approached from the wrong side.
History: The club began in 1893 as a nine-hole course. Harry Colt was commissioned to improve that original layout in 1913, and the current 18-hole course was formally reopened on 4 August 1923. Tom Simpson and Herbert Fowler were credited with the extension, with the club’s research concluding that Simpson was the most significant force behind the design that survives today.
Did You Know? Blackwell welcomed Bobby Jones in 1930, the day after his Open Championship victory at Royal Liverpool and before he returned to the United States to complete his Grand Slam. Sandy Lyle also developed his early game at Blackwell and remains closely associated with the club.
