Birr Golf Club

Overview: Birr Golf Club is one of the oldest and most geographically unique golf clubs in Ireland, founded in 1893. The course is established on a natural "esker" landscape—winding ridges of sand and gravel deposited by retreats of ancient glaciers. This geological setting provides exceptional natural drainage and a dramatic, undulating terrain that is highly unusual for an inland course. Redesigned by Eddie Connaughton in later years, Birr offers a technical and atmospheric parkland round among gorse-covered ridges and mature stands of timber.

Did You Know? Because of its construction on an esker, Birr Golf Club is widely considered one of the most playable inland courses in Ireland during the winter months. The natural sandy subsoil results in fairways and greens that remain firm and "linksy" even in the deepest Offaly winters, preserving the club's Victorian-era reputation for year-round high-quality golf.
