Big Spring Country Club

Overview: Big Spring Country Club occupies a rolling, wooded site in Louisville beside the Middle Fork of Beargrass Creek. The parkland course is defined by mature trees, tree-lined fairways and strategically placed fairway and greenside bunkers. The club's own golf description highlights zoysia fairways and tees, bentgrass greens and undulating putting surfaces that reward accurate positioning rather than simply length. The spring that gives the club its name remains part of the landscape near the 13th hole.

History: Big Spring was established in 1926, when the Big Spring Land Company acquired about 163 acres of the R.S. Veech Beargrass Stock Farm. The official club history credits Tom Winton with the original design and George Davies with construction engineering and early course management. William Diddle remodelled the course in 1951. After Interstate 64 clipped part of the property in 1964, Larry Packard redesigned several holes on the north side. The club then engaged Rees Jones for a major 2004 remodel, bringing the classic layout into its modern form.

Did You Know? Big Spring survived the economic strain of the Great Depression and the disruption of the Second World War. In 1960, as swimming and tennis became larger parts of the club's program, Big Spring Golf Club adopted the name Big Spring Country Club that it carries today.
