Benoni Country Club

Overview: Benoni Country Club is a mature East Rand parkland course built around the shade and structure of an established blue-gum landscape. The current routing is 18 holes and par 72, with tree-lined fairways creating a premium on finding the right side of the hole before approaching greens that can look narrower than the fairways from the tee. Its position in Benoni makes it part of the wider Johannesburg golf network while retaining the feel of a traditional local club.

History: Golf was being played in Benoni by the early 1900s, and the historical record traces the course layout to the period around 1905 to 1911. The land was originally associated with Van Ryn, the club later took the Benoni name, and the present country-club identity developed over the decades that followed. The course is credited to Robert Grimsdell in current golf records, while the club’s wider story includes the growth of the East Rand as a mining and residential region.
