Bellville Golf Club

Overview: Bellville Golf Club is an established parkland course in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, set in Welgemoed with the Tygerberg hills and wider Cape mountain landscape in view. Bellville’s current course covers 18 holes at par 72 and stretches about 5,814 metres, with five water holes adding definition to an otherwise mature, tree-lined round. Its moderate length makes placement and approach accuracy important, especially when the wind moves across the open parts of the property.

History: The course began as a nine-hole layout associated with designer Bob Grimsdell in the late 1950s. Bill Kerr was involved when the course became 18 holes in 1981, and Mark Muller later carried out improvement work in the 1990s. That layered history is still visible in the way the course combines an older suburban parkland framework with later changes to routing, greens and playing strategy.

Did You Know? Bellville was originally known as Welgemoed Golf Club, reflecting the name of the area where the course was established. The present name is now more familiar in course directories, but the earlier name remains an important clue when searching for historical records and older references to the same Cape Town course.
