Bear Mountain Golf & Country Club (Mountain Course)

Overview: Bear Mountain’s Mountain Course rises above Victoria on the southern end of Vancouver Island, using an elevated setting to create a very different scale of golf from the city below. The current resort page identifies an 18-hole, par-71 layout by Jack and Steve Nicklaus, with a 6,810-yard reference. Dramatic elevation changes, forested slopes and broad views toward Victoria, the Pacific Ocean and the Olympic Mountains give the course its name and its playing character.

History: The Mountain Course forms one half of Bear Mountain’s 36-hole Nicklaus Design resort, the first Canadian project co-designed by Jack and his son Steve. Bear Mountain was developed as a golf and residential destination, but the course’s strongest identity comes from its terrain: the routing climbs through a natural mountain setting instead of smoothing the site into conventional resort parkland. It has also hosted the Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship on the PGA TOUR Champions.

Did You Know? The course sits around 1,100 feet above sea level and the official materials describe the final hole as a demanding par five. Earlier press information used a 6,900-yard, par-70 back-tee reference, while the current Mountain Course page uses 6,810 yards and par 71. That variation is a reminder to treat tee-specific scorecards as the live source when comparing Bear Mountain with other destination courses.
