Bayview Golf Course

Overview: Bayview Golf Course is a private 18-hole course on Sydney's Northern Beaches, set around the peninsulas and wetlands near Winnererremy Bay. The club describes the course as par 71 for men and par 74 for women. Its character comes from the mixture of coastal openness, rolling ground, palms and mature vegetation. The layout can be enjoyable for different standards, but the sea air and changing wind make control and position more important than a simple chase for distance.

History: John Orr and his wife Christina arrived in the area in 1924, and Orr built six holes on the land known as Winnererremy Swamp for his own enjoyment. Others were invited to play, a small clubhouse followed in 1928 and more land was acquired in 1933. The incorporated Bayview Golf Club was founded on 29 November 1948, developing the modern club from the earlier local golf group.

Did You Know? The original course was connected with a one-shilling honesty system, an unusually informal beginning for a club that later became a private Northern Beaches venue. The earliest Bayview arrangement was remarkably informal: six holes, afternoon tea and an honesty tin beside the first tee. The later 1948 incorporation turned that small beginning into the established course on the peninsula.
