Barwon Heads Golf Club

Overview: Barwon Heads Golf Club is one of Australia's clearest expressions of natural links golf. The main course lies close to Bass Strait, where sand dunes, undulating fairways, subtle slopes and coastal wind create a setting that changes from day to day. It is not a heavily manufactured layout. The interest comes from the land itself, with cleverly positioned hazards and small, fast greens asking for control rather than brute force.

History: Golf began at Barwon Heads in 1907 on a nine-hole course north of the town. In 1921 the club approved a plan for the present coastal links, laid out by Victor East, and nine holes were playable by November. Eighteen holes followed by Easter 1922, while the heritage clubhouse dates to 1924. Later course planning has sought to protect the character of the original links while allowing carefully considered improvements.

Did You Know? The turf changes with the seasons. Local couch grass dominates the fairways in summer, while Poa annua provides cooler-month cover, and the greens are predominantly Poa annua. Combined with the nearby sea and exposed sand country, that living surface helps explain why the same routing can feel firm and fast one week, then softer and more receptive the next.
