Baltusrol Golf Club (Lower)

Overview: Baltusrol’s Lower Course is a private A.W. Tillinghast championship layout in Springfield. Its broad fairways, deep strategic bunkering and demanding green complexes give the course a powerful parkland character, while the long par-five finish creates a distinctive closing test. The architecture rewards a player who manages angles as carefully as distance.

History: Tillinghast completed the Lower Course in 1922, building on Baltusrol’s earlier golf history. The course has since hosted major championships including U.S. Opens and PGA Championships, with renovations intended to preserve its scale and championship character while keeping the routing relevant.

Did You Know? Baltusrol is named for Baltus Roll, the farmer whose land became part of the club’s story. The Lower Course’s back-to-back par-five finish is another enduring piece of its identity and one of the unusual features in major-championship golf.
