Ballymascanlon Golf Course

Overview: Ballymascanlon Golf Course is built as an 18-hole parkland layout at the Ballymascanlon Hotel and Golf Resort near Dundalk in County Louth. The course occupies mature estate ground on the Cooley Peninsula, with woodland, rhododendrons, the River Ballymascanlon and the historic Proleek Dolmen forming part of the setting. The current white-tee card gives a length of 5,758 yards and par 68; other tees have different pars and measurements. The course is therefore a compact estate round, not a long championship layout mislabeled by the directory.

History: The course began as a 9-hole project opened in 1991 and was designed and built by Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock. The resort later developed the course as an 18-hole parkland offering within its historic grounds. The estate itself is much older than the golf: the hotel highlights the Proleek Dolmen and a history stretching back many centuries. The golfing story is thus a late twentieth-century addition to an ancient and Victorian landscape.

Did You Know? The seventh hole is the course’s signature feature in the official information: a par four with a tight drive, a pond, an elevated green and the River Ballymascanlon in front. A Victorian garden wall sits behind the green. The hole brings together the estate’s water, masonry and mature planting in a single piece of golf architecture.
