Overview: Babe Zaharias Golf Course is a public Tampa course with roots in the former Forest Hills Golf and Country Club. The historic layout is managed by the Tampa Sports Authority and occupies the Forest Hills setting that has long connected northwest Tampa with municipal and neighborhood golf.
History: The course first opened in 1926 as Forest Hills Golf and Country Club. Mildred “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias bought it in 1949, managed the course for seven years, and hosted clinics and exhibitions. After the course closed and the clubhouse burned, the City of Tampa reopened it in 1974 under Tampa Sports Authority management.
Did You Know? Babe Zaharias reportedly lived for a period on the second floor of the original clubhouse. The course carries her name because her ownership was not merely honorary: she managed the property and used it as a place for golf instruction and public exhibitions.
