Overview: Athlone Golf Club is a historic parkland course located on the picturesque shores of Lough Ree in the center of Ireland. Founded in 1892, the course has evolved significantly over the decades, with a modern redesign by Eddie Connaughton enhancing its championship appeal. Characterized by its rolling "esker" hills and mature tree-lined fairways, Athlone offers a unique mix of inland and lakeside golf, where the elevation changes provide both a strategic challenge and breathtaking views across the Shannon waterway.
Did You Know? The course is often described as having a "Braid Hills" feel due to its dramatic gorse-covered ridges and undulating terrain. One of its most memorable features is the 12th hole, a par-4 that requires a drive over a valley followed by an approach shot toward a green that appears to sit directly on the water's edge, making it one of the most photographed holes in the Irish Midlands.
