Ardfin

Overview: At Ardfin, the coastal profile for Ardfin is listed at 6812 yards and par 72. The course follows rugged shoreline, cliffs, beaches and ridges above the Sound of Jura, with views across to Islay and back toward Jura House. It is a landscape-led design: narrow greens, natural slopes, stone walls and the wind do much of the work, while the course uses relatively few artificial bunkers because the cliffside ground already creates demanding recovery choices. The directory lists 6,812 yards, but the defining measure is not length alone. Several holes ask for a precise decision about how close to the coast to play and how much of the exposed land to use.

History: Ardfin's owner Greg Coffey asked Harrison in 2011 to develop a course on the Ardfin Estate. The architect made 27 visits over six years, and the course was ready for play in 2017 after construction through peat, rock and difficult coastal ground. The final routing was selected from 14 concepts, a process that reflects how carefully the estate's shoreline was studied before the holes were fixed. Ardfin remains part of a private island estate rather than a conventional resort complex. Its history is therefore as much about solving the construction problem as about drawing the holes: extensive drainage and careful shaping were required to create firm playing surfaces without erasing the wild character of Jura.

Did You Know? The second tee shot must carry a deep chasm, while holes 8 through 11 follow the cliff line and the 10th crosses from bluff to bluff as a par three. Only about 29 bunkers serve the 18 holes because the coastline and natural ground provide much of the hazard system.
