Overview: The West Course at Apogee is a private Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner design in Hobe Sound, Florida. Its par 72 routing stretches to 7,501 yards from the back tees, but the course is conceived at a more natural scale than that number suggests. Low-profile landforms, sandy ground, native grasses and carefully framed trees give the holes a restrained heathland character. Greens and bunkers were personally shaped by the design team, and the walking-friendly routing relies on changes of rhythm, angle and ground response rather than visual excess.
History: Apogee developed the West Course as the first of three golf layouts at the Hobe Sound club. The course opened in fall 2023 after Hanse and Wagner shaped a site that combines open ground with corridors through the trees. The club’s broader design team also includes Tom Fazio II, Mike Davis and Kyle Phillips on the South Course and practice facilities, but the West routing is specifically associated with Hanse and Wagner. Its opening marked a new Florida project built around walkability, understated architecture and private-club golf.
Did You Know? Every green and bunker on the West Course was personally shaped and finished by the designers on the project, according to Apogee. That hands-on approach is unusual at a project of this scale and helps explain why the course’s small details matter: a bunker edge, a shallow hollow or a subtle approach angle can change the intended line without announcing itself from a distance.
