Anyang Country Club

Overview: Anyang Country Club, also known as Anyang Benest, is a private 18-hole parkland course in Gunpo, within the Seoul metropolitan area. The original Japanese design by Chohei Miyazawa is now read through the substantial 1996 work of Robert Trent Jones Jr., with mature trees, gentle elevation and carefully placed water and bunkers shaping a classic Korean championship test. A current scorecard records par 72 and 6,951 yards from the gold tees. The course’s character is less about one dramatic landform than about the way the routing asks for accurate lines through established planting, followed by precise approaches to greens that were consolidated and reshaped during the Jones renovation.

History: The club opened in 1968 and became one of South Korea’s foundational modern country clubs. Its 1996 reconstruction was undertaken as the club approached its thirtieth anniversary, with Jones Jr. changing the original two-green system to a single-green layout and adding new strategic definition through streams, bunkers and revised playing angles. The work respected the existing natural setting while making the course more demanding and contemporary. Anyang has since remained a leading Korean venue and a regular reference point in domestic course rankings.

Did You Know? Anyang’s renovation is notable because the course moved from the older Korean convention of two greens per hole to a single-green system. That change did more than update the putting surfaces: it altered the angles of approach and made the relationship between the fairway, stream and green a central part of the strategy.
