Overview: Altaona Golf & Country Village is an 18-hole par-72 course south of Murcia, set among the dry hills and open landscape of Baños y Mendigo. Stirling & Martin designed the layout, which the regional golf association lists at 6,224 metres from the white tees, approximately 6,807 yards. Its position makes it a practical course for visitors combining Murcia with the Mar Menor coast, but the playing character is inland and spacious rather than beachfront. The course uses broad sightlines, changing ground and heat-resistant turf to create a round suited to the region’s warm climate.
History: Altaona was inaugurated in 2019 as part of the Altaona Golf and Country Village development. The course belongs to the newer generation of Murcia golf projects that combine an 18-hole layout with practice, hospitality and residential facilities. The regional tourism profile places the course around twelve minutes from the airport, fifteen minutes from Murcia and thirty minutes from the Mar Menor, which helps explain its role as a gateway course for the wider region rather than a club serving only one local neighbourhood.
Did You Know? Altaona uses Sea Spray Paspalum, selected for resistance to high temperatures and the salinity of the available water. That agronomic choice is central to the course’s identity because the surrounding landscape is naturally dry and the summer climate is demanding. The facility also publishes a 15-station practice area, putting and chipping greens, and racquet facilities, but the main course remains the anchor: a full par-72 layout shaped around Murcia’s open hills.
