Overview: Akaroa Golf Club is a compact 18-hole course at Duvauchelle, set above the head of Akaroa Harbour on Banks Peninsula. The men’s card measures 4,444 metres at par 67, but the short yardage does not remove the challenge. Undulating ground, harbour views and natural hazards make the correct landing area more important than simply hitting driver. The course offers a quieter counterpoint to Christchurch golf and fits naturally into a Banks Peninsula day or weekend.
History: Golf has moved around the Akaroa district more than once. Earlier courses existed close to the township and at Takamatua before the present Duvauchelle course replaced them in 1964. The club celebrated its centenary in 2022, a milestone marked by a special weekend and the preservation of its story in the book Sprigs and Tees. The current fairways therefore sit within a much longer local golfing tradition.
Did You Know? Akaroa’s scorecard offers three useful ways to experience the property: a full 18 holes, nine holes or a 12-hole round. That flexibility reflects the compact landform and lets a golfer enjoy the harbour setting even when time is limited.
