Overview: Akarana Golf Club is an established 18-hole parkland course in Auckland’s Mt Roskill, about 15 minutes from Queen Street. Its current scorecard lists a par 70 layout measuring 5,659 yards from the blue tees. The course is compact enough to fit naturally into the city, yet the routing asks for disciplined positioning and thoughtful approach play. Tree-lined corridors, shaped fairways and a mixture of shorter and longer holes give the round a varied rhythm.
History: Akarana’s roots reach back to the club’s incorporation in 1927, and it has remained on the same general Auckland site through its development. The club’s own history records a significant round of modernisation in 2003, when Chris Pitman redesigned holes 7, 8 and 11. That work forms part of the current course identity: a long-established city club whose layout has been adjusted rather than replaced.
Did You Know? Akarana’s inner nine is a par 34, while the full eighteen is listed as par 70. That small difference helps explain why the course can feel more tactical than its overall length suggests. Several of the most important decisions come from finding the right angle into the green, not simply from trying to hit every drive as far as possible.
