Afandou Golf Club

Overview: Afandou Golf Club is the only full 18-hole course on Rhodes, set beside Afandou Beach on the island's eastern shore. Current GGA material identifies the course as par 74, while the Hellenic Golf Federation describes Donald Harradine's routing as a coastal course shaped by a natural creek, seaside views and the dry Mediterranean landscape. The playing ground is open enough to show the influence of wind and distance, yet the rear portion moves toward more wooded and uneven terrain. It is a natural fit for a Rhodes golf itinerary because the round combines island scenery with a complete course rather than a short resort loop.

History: Course-history sources trace the Afandou project to land work beginning in 1962 and record the course's inauguration in 1973. It has remained the island's established full-length golf venue through changes in management and ownership. The present operator says the course is being progressively reshaped over the next two to three years, with Nicklaus Design responsible for the modernization plan and its irrigation and infrastructure upgrades. That is a continuing redevelopment story, not a claim that a new routing has already opened.

Did You Know? Older course descriptions divide Afandou into two contrasting halves: the opening nine is flatter and drier with a beachside feel, while the back nine runs closer to the hills and becomes more tree-lined. The distinction helps explain why the course can feel spacious from one tee and more positional only a few holes later.
