Achimota Golf Club

Overview: Achimota Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 parkland course in Accra, set among the trees of Achimota Forest. The club describes its current course as a landscape of lush fairways, strategic bunkers and TIF-Dwarf Bermuda greens. Top100 Golf Courses puts the layout at approximately 6,400 yards and highlights a routing that begins and ends with a par three, with consecutive par fives on both nines.

History: The club traces its origins to 1934, when golfers laid out seven holes after securing permission to clear part of the school grounds. Two more holes followed, and the first Ghana Open was played at Achimota in 1940. The course became an 18-hole layout about 30 years later and was re-sequenced in 1984. After almost two years closed, a Tullow Oil-funded reconstruction led by Paul McGinley reopened the redesigned course in October 2014.

Did You Know? Achimota's unusual routing means a round starts and finishes with a par three. The original course also played an early role in Ghanaian tournament golf: the club hosted the first Ghana Open in 1940, before the course had grown to its present 18-hole form.
