Aberdovey

Overview: Aberdovey is a coastal links at the mouth of the Dovey Estuary, set between the railway, beach and the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains. The course uses dunes, firm sandy ground, blind approaches and changing wind to create a strategic round that rewards imagination. Its compact relationship with the village and estuary gives the layout a distinctive Welsh character.

History: The club was founded in July 1892, and a full 18-hole course was ready by the end of that year. Herbert Fowler’s contribution in 1920 shaped much of the present layout after drainage work, while James Braid returned in preparation for the 1931 Welsh championship and extended the course. Both architects worked with the existing coastal contours.

Did You Know? Golf writer Bernard Darwin maintained a lifelong attachment to Aberdovey and wrote about it often. The club was also a founding centre of Welsh golf, and it helped establish the Welsh Golfing Union in 1895.
