7 Mile Beach (South Course)

Overview: 7 Mile Beach’s South Course runs through coastal dunes beside the Tasmanian shore near Hobart. Designed by Mike Clayton and Mike DeVries of Clayton, DeVries & Pont, it uses the site’s changing levels rather than flattening them into a conventional parkland layout. The round moves from high dune ground to protected hollows and down toward the water, with ocean views, coastal wind, wall-to-wall fescue, and short grass around the greens shaping the challenge. With only 37 bunkers, the course asks players to use the ground, choose lines carefully, and recover creatively.

History: The course grew from Mat Goggin’s long-held vision for a golf development on the Seven Mile Beach dunes. The project website describes five years of shaping by Clayton and DeVries, while Tourism Tasmania records the South Course’s public opening in December 2025. The architects aimed to make a distinctly Tasmanian links, using natural dune movement, firm running surfaces, and multiple angles rather than reproducing a British course in another setting.

Did You Know? The South Course’s 8th hole has dual greens, an unusual feature that gives the hole more than one strategic identity. The opening hole also deliberately echoes the strategic principles of Royal Melbourne’s opener, a detail that links this new Tasmanian course to one of Australia’s most influential Sandbelt designs. The course’s 37-bunker count is intentionally restrained for a modern coastal layout.
